Do Something Different with Jason Mesnick

After a difficult divorce, Jason Mesnick wanted to rediscover himself, rekindle his sense of adventure, and try something new. That was his mantra. And it sparked an unexpected journey that pushed him into the leading role in the 13th season of The Bachelor. Though he presents himself as a “normal guy” he clearly has lived an extraordinary reality tv experience that so few of us have (and of course we talk about this in depth, how unusual it really was) — but also how in many ways it’s a journey that parallels ours…building a living and a life around the things we love. Jason is a sage when it comes to coaching us to our follow inner instincts, focus on what matters, and take chances to expand our lives in unexpected ways. I’m pretty sure this interview is a side of a reality TV star that few people have ever experienced. In this episode we also: Dig into the very unique world that is The Bachelor TV show. As someone who admittedly doesn’t watch the show (but I’m married to someone who does!) it was a fascinating and at some times head scratching experience receiving very honest account from someone […]

It has also spawned an entire genre of similar blogs, photo projects, with thousands of aspiring creators having been inspired by HONY’s footsteps, telling the stories of people and communities across the world.  Oh ya, and he’s raised millions for charity. Lucky me, Brandon has been a friend for several years. And he once gave an amazing lecture to kick off PhotoWeek at CreativeLive.  It is THIS talk that I share with you today…  It’s his story, and it’s insanely inspiring.  From humble beginnings – fired from his job and with almost no money to speak of, moved to NYC to chase his dreams…living in a closet and taking pictures of strangers.  You’ll hear (literally) about his first ‘like’ on social media, and track his arc through today where he exemplifies the gold standard for building community on the internet — Brandon shares the whole journey.  If you know his […]

Unconventional Ways to WIN with Rand Fishkin

This week on the show we’ve got serial entrepreneur, marketer extraordinaire and SEO genius Rand Fishkin. Among other things, the guy is an online content legend, having built the legendary MOZ, one of the first online resources / communities helping creators optimize for SEO (yes search engine optimization…aka if you make content, it’s helping your people find you on the internet) and now he’s got a new company you’ve gotta know about, and a new BOOK, called Lost & Founder – aimed at helping all of us creators and entrepreneurs find our way. SUCH A USEFUL BOOK. But even more than the “what” Rand does…it’s the HOW he does it that I find completely extraordinary. Everything, it seems, has been non-traditional. From college dropout to serial entrepreneur. Join us on this conversational journey as we dispel startup culture tropes, ‘best practices’ and fight back against “traditional” wisdom. A few topics from this episode: There are three key components to building successful and enjoyable content: build on a medium that you are passionate about, create something of unique value, and put the content where your audience actually hangs out.  Sounds easy, but Rand is unapologetic and VERY helpful in guiding us […]
