STANDING OUT: Why You MUST Show Your Work + Be Different Not Just Better

Chase Jarvis Photography Chase

I get a lot of questions from you guys about how to breakthrough and get known. I usually say, “Aim to be different, not just better”. That suffices for most contexts when I’m giving surface level advice–it’s a quick, punchy answer– BUT what’s missing from this POV is a crucial step…the actual way people can identify that you’re “different”…and is this: YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK. In this episode of chasejarvis RAW I break down the ‘why’ behind showing your work…but I don’t do it alone! My friend Austin Kleon literally wrote the book on this topic so I hustled down to Texas and asked him to share his 3 top reasons for showing your work this hugely valuable and can break you from obscurity. Becoming a documentarian chronicles your work. As such you can track where you’re headed and where you’ve been. It also builds in accountability. If you set an intention to share something daily, weekly, or whatever interval, it forces you to create and be intentional in your work. Sharing your work is self promotion in an authentic way. And over time, people can see how your work evolves. People are just as interested in HOW the […]

Austin Kleon: Steal Like An Artist

Chase Jarvis Photography Nasa Koski

Austin Kleon is a writer who draws. He’s the best selling author of three illustrated books; Newspaper Blackout, Steal Like An Artist, and Show Your Work. Using his own words and borrowed (stolen) words alike, Austin articulates better than anyone how to find your own style and vision and then what to do with your work. He’s been featured on NPR, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and this is quickly becoming a regular here on cjLIVE. This interview is from a few years ago, but I’ve been itching to share it again because it still packs such a heavy punch. Austin, the quote factory, Kleon seems to have a quote that perfectly encapsulates every topic we touch on. We go from tip to toe on the creative process; how to draw inspiration for your work, how to hone your style while growing an audience, and how to ship your work. In today’s episode: Boring life = best art. Schedules, habits, daily routines make you more productive and more creative. If you aren’t sharing your work, you’re missing out on half of the artistic experience. The person who experiences your art is just as important as you are in […]

Austin Kleon: Productivity is Overrated

Chase Jarvis Photography Chase

Austin Kleon likes to call himself “a writer who draws.” He is the best selling author of three illustrated books (Newspaper Blackout, Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work), and one of the most insightful voices on the topic of creativity. He’s been featured on media institutions like NPR’s Morning Edition, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and PBS Newshour and speaks for organizations such as Pixar, Google, SXSW, TEDx, and The Economist. In today’s episode we talk about: Creativity & creative “genius”. Creative genius can be as much about your network (and how you use it) as it is about your work. It’s by looking around and seeing what people are doing, and also what they are not doing that new ideas form. We also talk about morning routines. One of the things that Austin likes to do, which I also subscribe is to, is do the creative stuff first. We also talk a bit about productivity. There’s a lot of pressure to hustle. He challenges that idea by saying to not focus on the hustle but focus on doing good work. Enjoy! Productivity is overrated. Just focus on doing good work. Every day when you go […]
